In over our heads

Here are this Sunday's readings:

I love Peter in the Gospel passage; he's always getting in over his head, isn't he? It's almost like he dares Jesus to command him to come to him across the water, but then he chickens out at the last minute.

And Jesus's response, as it so often is: "Do not be afraid." I think those are probably the words we most often need to hear from God.

Or at least I seem to need to hear them from God an awful lot! Maybe it's because I so often get myself in over my head. I'm always diving into things (marriage, parenthood, projects at work, household tasks, personal goals), only to wonder how I am ever going to stay afloat.

I'm learning that it's not my job to tread water until my strength gives out, but to reach out my hand for Christ to hold me up. If Christ has called me to something, he will uphold me through it.

Have you ever felt in over your head?
How did God help you stay afloat?
